Capitol Hill Residence
Minimal Meander
The Story:
When we first met our Clients, they were in the middle of a gut renovation project with MV Architects - their beautiful home was one of the oldest in Capitol Hill, and a previous addition had expanded its footprint but with low ceiling heights in the kitchen. The division of properties in the area left their home with not much rear yard, but a generous side yard that could be reconfigured. The Clients also had a passion for food gardening and native plants. Our approach was to use a flexible paving pattern that could expand and contract as necessary to create spaces for dining, but also, informal spaces within planting for reading. Stones are also scattered within the larger plant beds to allow for ease of movement through the herbs and fruits for harvesting. Stonedust softens the transitions between areas through textural contrast.
